Harmony Shopping Centre Oshawa
Date: 1998-2006 Partner-in-charge: Peter Smith
The Harmony Shopping Centre is a large 750,000 square foot open concept shopping centre at the corner of Harmony Road and Taunton Road. It was developed by Smart!Centres and is anchored by Wal-Mart, Real Canadian Superstore and Home Depot stores.
Bousfields provided the land use planning rationale in support of the designation of the centre and worked with staff from the City of Oshawa and Region of Durham to obtain approval of the required Official Plan and zoning amendments. The approvals for the initial phase of the development (approximately 585,000 square feet) were obtained in 1999.
Bousfields was subsequently retained in early 2004 in connection with applications for Official Plan Amendment and rezoning to permit an expansion of the existing shopping centre by 165,000 square feet, consisting of an additional 60,00 square feet located within the existing shopping centre site, and 105,000 square feet to be developed on currently vacant lands between the existing northerly edge of the shopping centre and Coldstream Drive. The expansion was approved by the City of Oshawa, the Region of Durham and the Ontario Municipal Board in early 2006.
