Riverside South Core Area Urban Design Guidelines
Ottawa

Date: 2005-2006
Partner-in-charge: Peter Smith

Bousfields has been involved in the planning for the Riverside South community since 1986.  Riverside South is a new community with a planned population of 55,000, which also includes a business park area associated with the adjacent Ottawa International Airport.  The community will include a mixed-use community core area integrated with a rapid transit corridor.

Bousfields was retained by the City of Ottawa in 2005 to prepare Urban Design Guidelines to guide the development of the Community Core Area.  The Community Core Area will contain two rapid transit stations, a “transit street” with the rapid transit line incorporated within the street median, a commercial “main street”, and a mix of medium and high density housing.  The Guidelines included detailed design drawings for elements of the public realm (street cross-sections, parks and squares) and manufacturers’ specifications (for lighting, street furniture and fences) and established an Architectural Image Bank for a variety of building types that will be applied by a Design Review Committee.

The Urban Design Guidelines were approved by City of Ottawa Council in February 2006.
